Party time at WIF/S HQ!
with Julia Sweeney
photos by Marcus Donner
Guest of Honor, Julia Sweeney and her family joined WIF members and guests at WIF/S’s 2nd Annual Festival Party Bash during the Seattle International Film Festival honoring female filmmakers. The party climaxed the premiere screening of Letting Go of God, Julia’s funny, tender, acclaimed film of her one-woman stand-up performance.
Julia Sweeney and her producer, and the WIF board: Barbara Brown VP, Virginia Bogert Prez, Heather Morado Secr, (the lovely Rebecca Van Pelt Production, is peaking through), Susan LaSalle Tres., Sue Corcoran Events (and isn’t she fabulous for pulling this one off!) Membership chair Laura Jean Cronin is MIA :)
Hailed by the LA Times as “Brave, hilarious and a gale-force breath of fresh air, Letting Go of God chronicles one woman’s unexpected and hilarious journey when two Mormon missionaries arrive on her doorstep and inadvertently challenge her way of thinking about religion, God, and the nature of self. Letting Go of God is a comical and poignant story of a woman’s struggle with faith in our modern, scientific era.”
Great guests, great food, great DJ, great party. A big thank you to Sue Corcoran, Events Chair, the lighting and decorating wizards and all those who made the party possible.

I Die Daily: The Making of Matthew Barney's Cremaster Cycle opens at 911 Seattle Media Arts Center
Seattle WA- On July 18, 911 Seattle Media Arts welcomes special effects artist and documentary filmmaker Matthew Wallin to its gallery with a video and sound installation based on his forthcoming film I Die Daily: The Making of Matthew Barney’s Cremaster Cycle. The installation will run through August 30 and features never-before-seen footage of Matthew Barney at work on the piece that inspired the New York Times to call him “The most important artist of his generation.”
In 1996, deeply intrigued by the work of Barney, filmmaker Matthew Wallin abandoned a steady job to spend the next decade documenting the making of Barney’s epic 5-part film, The Cremaster Cycle. What followed became a passionate exploration into the symbolism, mystery, and intricate process behind the Cycle. The result of his endeavor, I Die Daily, a definitive document on The Cremaster Cycle as well as the most comprehensive study of Barney as a star in the contemporary art world.
The press and public are invited to meet filmmaker Matthew Wallin in an opening reception for the artist on Friday July 18th from 6:00pm-10:00pm, followed by a gala event to raise finishing funds for the film on Saturday July 19th at 5pm. At the fundraiser, Matthew Wallin will screen 30 minutes of footage from the film, and discuss his experience making the film with a slideshow of images. Both the opening reception and the fundraiser will take place in the 911 Media Arts Gallery. The exhibit is curated by Misha Neininger, Executive Director, 911 Seattle Media Arts Center.

~In Memory~ Jim Hinde 1951-2008
It’s always difficult when amongst all the good and uplifting news there is sadness, but I want to tell you about a wonderful man, my friend, Jim Hinde who we all lost just recently.
He looks like Santa here, doesn’t he? Well, his heart was as big. And he had a bag of tricks filled with love and talent too.
I met Jim: busker, balladeer, composer/poet, activist and natural born story-teller in 2000 at Pike Place Market while scouting with camera for my documentary about that iconic institution, and bumped into this iconic institution. “And just what are you doing here in my Market?” he asked jocularly, I could almost hear the “Little Missy” at the end of that question. I faced a bunch of skepticism when I walked into that nine-acre hornet’s nest. Who was I? Did I know anything about what goes on in that family - outsider and a Jersey girl to boot? But not from Jim, he was as he always is kind, funny, all charisma, compassion, and good nature. He and I became friends, and that was the best thing that happened to me in the Market, of all the great and wonderful experiences there, friendships are the best.
Jim was, among a multitude of things, a Vietnam War Vet, who grew up on a Midwestern farm, rode the rails West and found a home in Pike Place Market where anyone could see him most any day singing on humanity’s behalf, playing his guitar in front of Starbucks or in Post Alley, and dispensing pearls of humor and wisdom. Jim was there for 18 years, organized the Pike Place Market Busker’s Guild, championed Veteran’s rights and everybody’s rights, and wrote songs that praised the good parts of America, and deplored war. I was proud to know him and I walked down a red carpet with him to accept a bunch of Emmys for Pike Place Market: Soul of a City –his too, for host/co-writer! And he was proud of that.
If you’ve seen the documentary you know that Jim, still is, its star. And he really does twinkle, as everyone will tell you. He is beloved in the Market, and it’s a tough audience, roiling with a hundred years of passion. Many hundreds of folks stood in the rain at the north end of Pike Place Market on the 2nd of July to celebrate Jim’s life and to say goodbye. We talked about him, quoted him, we sang his songs, the city council even proclaimed a tender proclamation in his name! Jim is in many ways the soul of what that place is. He was a gift to the Market and to Seattle, and to anyone who was fortunate enough to cross his path.
Janet, his wise, grounding partner-spitfire wife, and love of his life; and his two adored, exceptional kids, Katie and Nate, as well as the rest of us, have lost a just, loving peacemaker, and a very rare good man.
